Educators might be interested in the life and work of Mabel Walker Willebrandt, whom President Warren G. Harding appointed Assistant Attorney General and gave her the responsibility of enforcing the Prohibition amendment. From 1921-1929, Willebrandt was the highest-ranking female public officials in the nation. Sometimes called the First Legal Lady of the Land, sometimes called Prohibition Portia, Willebrandt wielded the law as a weapon against criminals and corrupt politicians. She never used a gun to uphold the law. You can read more about her in “A Twist of Lemon.”
