Teaching and Learning About Disabilities

The  London 2012 Paralympic Games can provide a great opportunity to teach students about individuals with disabilities.  Just last week WGBH in Boston launched a Special Collection on Teachers’ Domain — and soon to appear on PBS LearningMedia — called “Adaptive Technologies,”  standards-based resources to increase students’ understanding of people with disabilities. We think you and students will find it engaging and informative.

Here’s one of the seven resources in the collection: “Designing Swimming Prosthetic for a Dancer.”  In this video segment adapted from DESIGN SQUAD, dancer and performance artist Lisa Bufano, a bilateral leg and finger amputee, challenges the teams to build specialized prostheses for an underwater performance. The teams keep aesthetics and function in mind as they use the engineering design process to create adaptive technologies.
