When students return from Veteran’s Day, will they appreciate the significance of their day off from school?  PBS LearningMedia has plentiful resources to help students learn about those who serve and too often die and this day that honors them.

The Way We Get By:  Historical Perspectives: Coming Home From War  (Grades 6-12):  Students conduct an investigation that compares and contrasts the homecoming experiences of soldiers who served in World War II, the Vietnam War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

VE Day (Grade 11) :  In this KACV educational unit on WWII, students learn about Victory in Europe day through videos, activities, and an audio project.

Facing It, by Yusef Komunyakaa (Grades 7-12) :  Fourteen years after the Vietnam War, veteran and contemporary poet Yusef Komunyakaa wrote about facing the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial wall and the memories and images the wall evoked in this video segment from Poetry Everywhere.
