NOVA: Alien Planets Revealed Plus Space & Flight Resources

alien-planets-revealed-viOn Wednesday, January 8, at 9pm, WGBY airs NOVA:  Alien Planets Revealed where viewers explore strange worlds and possible creatures in the thousands of exotic new worlds far beyond our solar system that NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler Telescope has discovered.  You can see a preview and find classroom resources at NOVA’s website and at PBS LearningMedia.

In addition to Alien Planets Revealed’s vivid animation and input from expert astrophysicists and astrobiologists, NOVA’s beta website offers related links, including Space and Flight resources.  Searching Space and Flight at PBS LearningMedia, you’ll find almost 2,000 PreK-12 resources you can narrow by grade and curriculum.   A search of Kepler Telescope yields over 50 resources, often with support materials and standards, such as the following:

Telescope Girl (Grades K-8):  In this ZOOM video segment 12-year-old Katy gives people in her neighborhood a glimpse of the moon through a 10-inch reflecting telescope she built.

Star Gazing (Grades 3-5):  In this interactive, students determine the correct angle at which to place a telescope in order to see as many stars as possible.

Einstein’s Cosmic Speed Limit (Grades 9-12):  This video, adapted from NASA, presents rare experimental evidence from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope supporting Einstein’s prediction that space-time is smooth.
