The Power of Generative Art

What would it be like to recreate the “essence of life” in digital form?  As one artist in this video describes his use of generative art, it is artwork that has a process with multiple possibilities. A combination of creative artists, programmers and philosophers are now embracing this process that gives up control of essential decisions – like creating art – to computers, data sets or even random variables.

“This century is the century of data,” says another generative artist in framing the process’s importance. So what do students need to know to make sure they are taking advantage of the power of generative art, and how does it apply to creating not only art but music, games and animations?
