Winter Science: The Social Hierarchy of Snow Monkeys

Oh, what fun it is to learn in a video from the PBS series NATURE, where a group of snow monkeys — except troop leader Kuro-San — enjoys the hot springs of Hell Valley in Japan.  Students can examine how and why group hierarchies evolve and Kuro-San’s place in his particular social system.  Like many species that live in groups, snow monkeys adhere to a system of social hierarchy.  As students observe newborns, young and adults in rankings that can move up or down the social structure, they can learn what factors determine status and how it affects overall group survival.  Find The Social Hierarchy of Snow Monkeys, support materials and related content at PBS LearningMedia.
