The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Through the Eyes of a Westfield Colleen

IMG_9456My name is Anna Grady and, as a senior at Westfield High School, I have been lucky enough to intern here at WGBY in the Education and Community Engagement Department these past few months.

Growing up in a large, close-knit family who celebrates its Irish heritage proudly, St. Patrick’s Day is a big day. Those of Irish heritage are often enthusiastic about their ancestry anytime of year; however, this day is extra special, a day to love and honor where their families come from.

Here in Western MA, the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a huge, annual event that draws many people from the area. With representation from many surrounding towns and cities, the local high school bands, fire and police departments, and all others marching by, there is no shortage of excitement.  This year the parade was even more special for me and my family.  As a member of the 2016 Westfield Colleen Court, I was able to ride through the parade route on the Grand Prize Winning float. (I’m far left in this photo.) I felt excited and honored to represent not only the Sons of Erin, but the city of Westfield and all those who value their Irish heritage. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade has always been a unifying event for my family and seeing how proud they were as I rode past them on the float is a memory I will have forever.

WGBY has been broadcasting the parade for the past 15 years, and viewers from literally around the world are able to enjoy it streaming live on the internet as well.  You can find behind-the-scenes video of the parade and the entire parade at WGBY’s website.
