While dedicated teachers are unlikely to expect applause, appreciation from a past student can bring unexpected pleasure. Harold Grinspoon, philanthropist and founder of the Pioneer Valley Teachers of Excellence Awards (formerly, Grinspoon Teachers), is reported to have said that “Nobody every thanks teachers.” Because of his vision and support, we recognize and thank teachers in our region each year for their high-quality work in education.
Across the country we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week in the first week in May, a tradition started by the National Parent Teachers Association. While some educators may be able to enjoy a free meal at a favorite spot, find donuts and coffee in teachers’ rooms, or receive discounts on products, perhaps the most meaningful gift is simply to say “thank you.” WGBY wants to express its deep thanks to all of you dedicated to improving the lives of students and the health of our nation through education.
