JULY 14 is designated as Summer Learning Day to highlight the importance of keeping kids learning, safe and healthy over the summer — a particular challenge for many children and families without sufficient resources. This annual national advocacy day is led by the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA).
To help keep kids learning, WGBY’s 2016 Summer of Fun & Learning is designed to engage children ages 4 – 12 with high-interest PBS educational resources. Our 2 summer interns from Springfield will serve as station ambassadors as well as role models, accompanying WGBY education staff on weekly visits to the YMCA of Greater Springfield, Head Start and WGBY’s North End Center for Literacy & Learning, located at Gerena Community School. At these sites children will read together, play PBS KIDS digital games, do hands-on activities and receive books — all in the effort to impact their learning and help stem the summer reading slide.
