As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, WGBY airs the 29th Hispanic Heritage Awards on Friday, September 30, at 10:00pm.   Paying tribute to Latinos by Latinos, the awardees this year include Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and writer and MIT professor, Junot Díaz.

Applauding women and men who contribute to their country and bring pride to their heritage is one way to counter stereotypes and cultivate mutual respect.  Education can go deeper with resources that engage students in the challenges and accomplishments of those with similar and different backgrounds.  Searching “Latino Americans” on PBS LearningMedia, you’ll find scores of resources, among them those from the PBS series of the same name and rich lesson plans to accompany the series.
