What a reason to be excited! In 1987, Congress declared March to be Women’s History Month, and there’s so much history to learn about. While March is about to end, that doesn’t mean you can’t keep teaching about the amazing contributions women have made to the world.

If you’re worried about finding resources or just need some extra help, don’t worry.  PBS LearningMedia has you covered.  For an introductory lesson about how Women’s History Month was established, as well as a few key points in women’s history, click here. If you’re looking for more advanced lessons, PBS LearningMedia has a great collection of stories, personal narratives, and films about women of all ages around the world striving for social change, many of the stories being from women of color.

To bring my own UMass background into this, Amherst is home to the Emily Dickinson Museum, a living monument to her work and life, as, believe it or not, she was born right here in Amherst, Massachusetts. Dickinson was an American poet whose work has been a staple in literary culture, and has inspired many writers. There is a wonderful video narrated by John Green that discusses her life and poetry (which also leads right into next month: Poetry month!).
