Teaching Children about Black Leaders & Heroes

PBS offers rich resources to honor African Americans during Black History Month and throughout the year.  Children can learn about the Black leaders of yesterday and today, exploring Black scientists, politicians, activists, artists, and others who have left their mark on U.S. history with a recent article, Celebrating Black Leaders | PBS KIDS for Parents.

The Xavier Riddle Hero Maker game celebrates Black heroes as children create their own heroes and learn more about Maya Angelou, Frederick Douglass, Rosa Parks, & more!

Older students in grades 4-12 can better understand the history of African Americans by examining artifacts from three eras in American history — the Civil War, WWI, and the Civil Rights Movement — with African American History / History Detectives virtual learning-ready lesson plans.

When you search specific topics such as African Americans at PBS LearningMedia, you’ll find an amazing number of resources that you can narrow by grade, content areas and resource type.
