WGBY’s New Documentary on the Big E — More Than Amusement Rides & Corn Dogs

Whether the Big E — the Northeast’s largest fair and country’s only multi-state fair — is an annual tradition or a source of regional pride, you’ll find much to learn from 100 Years on the Avenue:  The Story of the Big E, airing tonight on WGBY at 8pm.  WGBY’s production team, led by Dave Fraser, worked tirelessly to craft this important, new local documentary.

We can hear the dedication behind the film’s production in Fraser’s words:  “I wanted to create a documentary that really told the story of The Big E from the perspective of each of the six New England states.  The Big E is much more than amusement rides and corn dogs; it’s about industry and agriculture. It’s about our livelihoods and our food supply.”

For resources that take a broader look at industry and agriculture in the U. S., Continue reading

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Through the Eyes of a Westfield Colleen

IMG_9456My name is Anna Grady and, as a senior at Westfield High School, I have been lucky enough to intern here at WGBY in the Education and Community Engagement Department these past few months.

Growing up in a large, close-knit family who celebrates its Irish heritage proudly, St. Patrick’s Day is a big day. Those of Irish heritage are often enthusiastic about their ancestry anytime of year; however, this day is extra special, a day to love and honor where their families come from.

Here in Western MA, the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a huge, annual event that draws many people from the area. With representation from many surrounding towns and cities, the local high school bands, fire and police departments, and all others marching by, there is no shortage of excitement.  This year the parade was even more special for me and my family.  As a member of the 2016 Westfield Colleen Court, I was Continue reading

Connected Teachers & Connected Learners: Focus of 2016 Technology in Education Conference

The guiding questions for this year’s Technology in Education (TiE) Conference, “Connected Teachers / Connected Learners,” are compelling ones.   They have to do with how technology can engage local and global communities, center young people’s voices, support authentic and empowering partnerships, and connect teachers.  Equally important to ask, what are the skills, experience and mindset that teachers and students need to be successful?
WGBY will be among conference presenters on Thursday, January 14, at Holyoke Community College with
