Professional Development Day: Teaching Prohibition and Its Compelling Themes
WGBY and the Springfield Museums are pleased to offer an exciting day of professional development at the Lyman & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History, FREE to educators in our region on February 8, 2012 from 8:30am-4:00pm. Teaching Prohibition and Its Compelling Themes is inspired by the recent, acclaimed PBS documentary from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick and designed to give you rich resources from a day filled with presentations, viewings, workshop and tours. You’ll receive lesson plans and activities from the Prohibition film, including a DVD set of the series, and learn about the latest from PBS digital media for classroom resources that reach far beyond this transformational era in our history.
We’ll begin with a light breakfast and later lunch in the Great Hall of the Wood Museum. There, mural-lined walls of Springfield and its residents early in the 20th century and rooms of vintage automobiles evoke the city’s rich history and highlight its present role in shaping its future. We’ll explore the vast resources of the Springfield Museums/Archives and end the day with a special tour of the new exhibit Old Masters to Monet: Three Centuries of French Paintings from the Wadsworth Atheneum.
We’d love you and students to benefit from this special professional development opportunity. Since space is limited, please register soon. We would also appreciate your help in spreading the word by sharing/posting the downloadable flyer. For more information, please contact Bess Kapetanis in WGBY’s Education and Outreach Department: 413.781.2801 ext 292 / bkapetanis@wgby.org

“Teachers on the Estuaries” Summer Professional Development 2011
Posted on estuaries.gov, Teachers on the Estuaries will soon open the application process for FREE 4-day summer PD workshops in Maine, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. The goals of this learning initiative are to “improve teachers’ and students’ understanding of the environment using local examples, provide resources and experience to support the incorporation of estuary and watershed topics into classroom teaching” and to “promote stewardship of watersheds and estuaries.”
The workshops are designed for middle and high school teachers, but others are welcome to apply. Participants will work with local scientists and coastal educators to explore estuary habitats, practice scientific field activities, and bring data into the classroom. The workshops are free, but space is limited so an application will be required. Workshop dates are in July and August (see website below for details).
Lodging (if needed) and some meals will be provided and participating teachers will be awarded: $200 stewardship project mini-grant, $150 worth of equipment, and a $100 stipend upon successful completion of the course.
For more information on applications or training dates, visit this page. The applications are listed as “Coming Soon”, so if you are interested, check back often.
Note: WGBY is not affiliated with this professional development opportunity; we learned of it through the local STEM network and felt it was valuable to share. Please forward all questions to the contacts listed on the Teachers on the Estuaries page. Thanks!
